Universal Becoming "Villains"?

We've seen plenty of superhero movies, but what about one actually centering around a bad guy? Well that's finally coming to fruition as Universal has scooped up the rights to an upcoming Viper Comics graphic novel titled "Villains". The graphic novel, by Adam Cogan and Ryan Cody, puts super bad guys center stage. The plot, told from the baddies' perspective, follows a young man who is failing at life and finds purpose when he meets a Svengali-style villain who takes him under his wing. Universal paid mid six figures for the movie rights and have tapped Matt Jennison and Brent Strickland (their currently working on "Wonder Woman for Warner Bros.") to pen the adaptation. Sean Bailey is producing via his Idealogy banner.


The graphic novel hasn't even been released yet, so I really can't give any thoughts other then I hope its good!!

Mark Millar's Idea for a Godfather-like Superman Epic

In early September, comic book writer, Mark Millar, stated that he was working with a big time movie director to pitch his Superman idea to Warner Brothers. The idea consists of an 8-hour saga which will be split into 3 films and released a year apart from each other similar to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Millar stated, "It's gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him...I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."
There hasn't been any word on whether or not Warner Bros will accept the idea. Cerebronews will definitely keep you posted on this story. Until then, head over to firstshowing for more info on Mark Millar's epic idea.

Honestly, this idea sounds freakin amazing. If they can do the story right, and allow Superman to actually fight in the movie instead of having major action scenes centered around shoulder pressing a mountain of kryptonite (Superman Returns= ridiculous), this may indeed become the Godfather of superhero movies. Its going to be very hard to contend with a movie like The Dark Knight though. Lets hope that Warner Bros will accept the idea.

Angels & Demons is a prequel to Dan Brown's famous novel, The Da Vinci Code. The director and screenwriter of the Da Vinci Code film (Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsmen) are back to their respective duties for Angels & Demons.

Downey Jr. Accepts Huge Marvel Deal

Robert Downey Jr. has agreed to not only be in the Iron Man sequel and The Avengers films, but to also come back for a 3rd installment of the Iron Man franchise. Iron Man 2 is set to be released on May 7, 2012.

According to superherohype, it is now official that Iron Man will indeed be a part of The Avengers film. The full superhero line up for the movie will be Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk. Jon Favreau will be executive producer of the movie. It is planned to be released on July 15, 2011.

Warner Bros. Plan For Live Action Ninja Scroll Film

The highly popular anime film, Ninja Scroll is in the process of being turned into a live action feature. WB has obtained rights to the anime and have planned to have Alex Tse write the script for the movie. Ninja Scroll was released in 1993 and is amongst the most popular anime movies outside of Japan. Lets hope the live action film can live up to the anime's reputation.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Gets Watered Down

In efforts to achieve a Teen rating to appeal to a larger videogame audience, Midway has decided to tone down the violence in MK VS. DC. An example of this is seen in Joker's original fatality move. At first it was intended for Joker to shoot his opponent with a fake gun that has a flag saying "BANG!." Immediately after this, he shoots them in the head with a real gun. Now this was a pretty awesome idea. Unfortunately, to keep the T-rating, they do not allow players to see their opponents shot with the real gun anymore. I hope you all know that I said "Thanks Midway!!" with as much sarcasm as possible. I know Midway is in need of money, but come on, they are ruining the whole meaning behind Mortal Kombat. When I even here the words Mortal Kombat, the first thing that pops in my mind is "FINISH HIM!" Combining Mortal Kombat with DC superheroes (characters who do not kill) was already questionable to me, and now they're taking out the few things that I did find cool about it. I'm having a bad feeling about this one. What does everyone else think?

Bioware talks about Knights of the Old Republic 3-12

James Ohlen, creative director at Bioware has recently made a remark about KOTOR 3 being a part of Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO.
In a video interview he was quoted saying:"One of the things we like to joke about this game… is just the sheer amount of content we’re doing and the fact that when our fans ask ‘Why aren’t you doing Knight of the Old Republic 3?’ …we’re really doing KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12+. We have THAT much content, that many stories, and we really get to do a lot of the things that we wouldn’t have been able to do in KOTOR 3.

One of the things about the type of storytelling that we’re doing, because their stories revolve around a player’s class (his role), we’re able to actually tell stories that are very focused on who the player is. Which is something that other BioWare games haven’t been able to do.”

Army of Two: Headed to the Silver Screen?

According to firstshowing, EA and Universal Pictures have joined forces to make a movie adaption of the game Army of Two. The screenwriters of Bourne Ultimatum and The Breakup (Scott Z. Burns and Scott Stuber respectively) have been hired to create the story. Universal hopes to start production for the film in 2009. Click on the link above for more info on the film.

Remember the "Mad World" ad that coincided with the original? Well "Last Day" has the same feel. I guess its going for the calm before the storm approach, so for fans waiting impatiently for the sequel to arrive the undertone is perfect.

Fable 2 Launch Trailer!

Even though a lot of people thought the original Fable was underdeveloped and didn't live up to the hype, for some reason I loved it. The game while not fully realized had an unbridled charm, that made it hard not to like. Peter Molyneux has promised that a lot of improvements have been made for the sequel (without putting his foot in his mouth) and so far it looks like he might have actually succeeded. The game comes out on October 21st so be on the lookout for a review, right here at Cerebro News.

Brad Pitt to go on an 'Odyssey'

After turning Homer's epic poem "The Iliad" into the 2004 film "Troy," Warner Bros. and Brad Pitt are teaming with George Miller to adapt the Greek poet's other masterwork, "The Odyssey."

Their intention is to transfer the tale to a futuristic setting in outer space.

Both Homer poems dealt with the Trojan War; "The Odyssey" focused on the exploits of Odysseus, who hatched the idea to build the Trojan Horse. "The Odyssey" deals with his long journey home after he declines to become a god.

New Conan Film is a Go

Today, AICN confirms that Brett Ratner will be the director of the new Conan film. The movie is planned to be released sometime in 2009.

Bourne is Back!

Today, Variety has announced that Universal has hired a writer for a fourth installment of the Bourne series. They hope to have the film done by the year 2010. Bourne Ultimatum was supposed to be the final installment, but due to its humongous success at the box office ($227 million domestically!!), they thought it would probably be a good idea to make another one. The co-writer of Ultimatum, George Nolfi has been hired to pen the new script.

Come on man.......The Bourne Trilogy was excellent and ended just right. There's no need for another one., this just opens up a chance to screw up the image of the series in its entirety. This what happens when Hollywood just wants to cash in on a franchise. Lets hope this new film is as good as the rest of the series.

Konami Silences Rumors of 360 MGS4

Earlier this week,
Konami PR rep Yoshitaka Arai was quoted saying, "we are investigating releasing a 360 version,” in regards to Metal Gear Solid 4. This comment was spread all over the web, sparking rumors of a potential MGS4 port.

According to
Gamecycte, the source article containing Yoshitaka's quote was quietly edited, taking out any mentioning of MGS4. It was then replaced with news on the games, Pro Evolution Soccer and the Castelvania series. The editing of this article may be the cover up of plans or ideas that Konami does not want released to the public. This news may give PS3 owners some hope in MGS4 exclusivity, knowing that plans for a MGS4 ports have not been set in stone. Cerebronews will keep you posted on this story.

An Incredibly American Cameo?

'The Incredible Hulk' is going to be released on DVD & Blu-Ray soon, and the people over at FilmSchoolRejects found an awesome little Easter Egg.


Do you see him? Maybe this will help.


Now its not one of the bigger cameos along the lines of Nick Fury in Iron Man or Tony Stark at the end of this film. But it does show that Marvel sees the crossover potential for all of its Superheroes and takes it very seriously. See that photo I posted below? This cameo means it's slowly coming to fruition.

Hulk vs The Avengers?!

We already know that Marvel is working on an Avengers movie and that its set for release in 2011. What we didn't know is who The Avengers nemesis would be.

"The Incredible Hulk" Director Louis Leterrier had told MTV News this past June that he didn't think any villain could stand up to them, and suggested they use a hero instead: his.


"Iron Man" writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby couldn't agree more, insisting that everything is building up towards making The Hulk the villain in the eagerly anticipated movie for 2011.


“I hope ‘The Avengers’ embraces that,” Fergus said of having the Hulk as misunderstood baddie. “You don’t want like 10 super-badass good guys fighting together. Where’s the fun in that? Let’s break it off a little. Friends or colleagues who become enemies is always an interesting thing because you know it’s based on love and friendship and that’s always the worst thing to have turn bad — is someone you actually care about and someone you actually believe in.”

Japanese Website Launch For Street Figher: Legend of Chun Li

Here's a look at a recently released Japanese Poster of the upcoming Street Fighter Film. A Japanese website has also been launched. The site is pretty boring, being that it only displays the poster and Japanese writing that I can't read. If you want to check it out though, head over to streetfighter-movie.gyao.jp

The film is set to release in theaters on February 27th 2009. Lets hope Fox does not screw this up like the other franchise their currently destroying (Dragonball Z.)

Konami's Thoughts On A MGS4 Xbox 360 Port.

I'm sure this rumor has raised the blood pressure of all PS3 owners across the globe while putting a smile on all Xbox360 owners faces at the same time. Metal Gear Solid 4, which was promised to be a Playstation exclusive may in fact be coming to the Xbox 360 due to high demand for the game. At the Tokyo Game Show, Konami PR Yoshitaka Arai was quoted saying, " The worldwide demand for an Xbox 360 version (of MGS4) is quite high, and it is something we are currently looking in to." Ok.........let me ask you guys a question. What's the point of having multiple videogame consoles if every damn "exclusive title" is gettin ported to the competing systems? You remember the days of Playstation 1 and N64 when people were able to take pride in their specific system due to the unique titles each had?? Cheadle replaces Howard in Iron Man 2!

Don Cheadle is stepping in to replace Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2," Marvel Studios' sequel to its summer blockbuster.

In the movie, Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man's best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine. One scene featured Howard looking at a silver suit of armor and saying "Next time," a line that caused great delight for fans.


But there will be no next time for Howard.

Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.


Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay.


Jon Favreau is returning as director, and Robert Downey Jr. is expected back as billionaire industrialist Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts.

WTF?! Are you kidding me? Man I love Don Cheadle but him replacing Terrance Howard?! Damn this really caught me off guard, does Marvel not think the audience won't see that its a different person in the role? Theres something called continuity and even though comics don't follow it all the time, when their done on film its a totally different ball park. I believe Marvel has the mentality that the Superheroes themselves are the stars, which is true to a certain extent, but if that were the case why not cast just anyone in the role? Don't get me wrong Don Cheadle is a great actor and I think he'll do justice to Jim Rhodes/War Machine. I just like these movies to have continuity because it draws you into the experience more as a movie goer.
Sigh......

Sonic and the Black Knight Trailer

In all seriousness, while Sonic Unleashed is actually shaping up to be a return to form for the franchise, this looks like crap. First the execs at Sega thought it was an ingenious idea to give Shadow a gun and base a platformer around that, and now they think giving Sonic a sword is an even better one.....

Would Nintendo give Mario a sword?

Starcraft 2: A Trilogy Being Milked Dry

If you haven't already heard, Blizzard has come up with the brilliant idea to release Starcraft 2 as not one game, but as 3. They've decided on making it a trilogy so as not to "compromise" on the quality of the single player campaigns for each faction.....

C'mon are you kidding me? How long has this game been in development? Either Blizzard was busy counting the cash they've made on WoW or the new execs from the recently finalized merger between Activision & Viviendi (forming Activision Blizzard) see a new cash cow. I'd like to think its the latter and not the former
(might be a bit of both....).


Activision is already milking Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft and soon to be James Bond. We also saw Tony Hawk get milked till its teats were dry. So do we really need a game like Starcraft 2 being released yearly?

The first game will be called Terran: Wings of Liberty
The second release will be Zerg: Heart of the Swarm
and to complete the trilogy Protoss: Legacy of the Void

Which would mean were Starcraft 2 to be released in 2009, we wouldn't get to play through the campaign of the Protoss till 2011!

As a fan whos waited 10 years for a true sequel, hearing this as news from Blizzard is depressing, not to mention it makes you think on what their plans are for Diablo III.....

Marvel vs Capcom 2 Coming to XBLA and PSN?!

A member of NeoGaf was scavenging through the ESRB ratings and came across Marvel vs Capcom 2. Not only did he come across it, but he saw it as being newly relisted for Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS3! Capcom is unofficially bringing a HD update to the classic 3v3 fighter! Fanboys rejoice!

Ok...im kinda worried about this one. the quality of the animation isn't nearly as good as the CGI in Final Fantasy Advent Children and came out 3 years ago! It looks like a common cut scene in an Xbox 360 game. Seeing this lack of quality now makes me believe that they're trying to cash in on a highly popular franchise rather than making a quality film. Let's hope that i'm wrong.

Street Fighter IV TGS 2008 Trailer & News

I am seriously hyped for this game. Street Fighter IV looks like its going to bring back 2D fighting games with style & substance.

In other news, two new additions have been made to the console specific roster on PS3 and Xbox 360: Sakura and Seth who's the arcade versions end boss. They join the other two previously announced console exclusives Fei-Long & Dan.

Sony wants Microsoft to succeed? Say Wha?!

Sonys President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida has stated that he wants Microsofts Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan to push the concept of HD gaming to local consumers.....

In the interview with Eurogamer.net he goes on to say "I like to see people here in Japan showing interest in high-definition gaming and more sophisticated gaming experiences,"

"In terms of realistic-looking graphics and smarter AI, they haven't really shown the appetite for what this generation of gaming can offer. I'd really like to see both PS3 and 360 succeed here."

"What Microsoft is offering and what we are offering are closer, compared to what other platforms are offering. Because of that commonality, the new games coming out on 360 and PS3 help to get consumers more interested in this generation of gaming," he added.

WTF?! A first if I've ever heard one, did Microsoft put something in Sonys Kool Aid ? because if so I want some! In all seriousness I think that this type of mentality
could benefit both Sony and Microsoft in the long run. If consumers start accepting HD gaming on a more mass scale then they are currently, sales for both companies will improve ten fold. It just shows you how dominating the Wii has been to have made former rivals compliment one another for the sake of more market share!

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

According to superherohype, Marvel Animation is beginning production on The Avengers animated series. Film Roman, the company behind "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill," have been hired to produce the 26-episode series. It is planned to be released in 2011 in time for Marvel Studios' release of The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers films.

If they put effort into this series similar to the way DC did with the Justice League series, comic book fans are in for another great cartoon.

Halo 3: Recon (No Master Chief?)

For those of you who don't know, a few weeks back we posted an article on a mysterious trailer popping up on bungie.net that had the Halo 3 insignia appearing at the very end of the video. Well the wait is over and
Halo 3: Recon has just been unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show. The game will be an expansion to the original Halo 3, and surprisingly Master Chief will not be headlining the game. A new space marine will be featured and the game is set to release in fall 2009.

I'm actually excited about this one. Lets hope that the new space marine will play differently then Master Chief, so we can have some new game controls and abilities in the game.

Gears of War 2 is Gold!

The title of this article speaks for itself. There's really nothing else to say. You guys should be on the lookout for this game's release on November 7th. The Express: A Ride Worth the Ticket Price

So I have to admit, I walked into the theater for this one with low expectations. I mean, there has been more sports films with African Americans overcoming discrimination than you can probably count on your two hands in the past couple of years. Seeing the trailer for this movie, I was thinking to myself, “here goes another one.”

I was surprisingly wrong with this idea though. You know that saying, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Well, the Express is surely representative of this saying. The Express is able to use a recycled format with fresh additions to make this another sports movie worth watching, and probably even worth purchasing to add to your collection of inspirational films.

The Express is a movie depicting the college football career of Ernie Davis, the first African American Heisman trophy winner. Ernie Davis goes to Syracuse University where he replaces the legendary Jim Brown (former Syracuse running back) to become the next great running back and also to help the team win their first National Championship. While facing racial discrimination on and off the football field, Ernie Davis must strive to not only be the best football player he can be, but also the best role model he can be for his people.

With a combination of great acting, and great football sequences in the film, the story about Ernie Davis will keep audiences’ attention the entire length of the film.

What makes the film so damn intriguing to me is its great depiction of football. The way director Gary Fleder films the football sequences makes it seem as if you’re a referee or one of the players on the field viewing the game up close and personal. While many sports films only show snippets of many games throughout a team’s season, The Express not only shows snippets of each game in Syracuse’s National Championship season, but also puts a lot of emphasis on the two big games played that year (West Virginia and Texas). These two games are portrayed beautifully, making audiences feel as if they’re watching the games play by play from the beginning of the 1st quarter to the last couple of seconds of the fourth quarter. This allows the audience to connect with the team and the obstacles they face even more than most sports films.

Besides the football seasons, the story of Ernie Davis’ struggles as an African American is portrayed excellently. The acting is superb, and causes everything to seem very realistic. The pacing of the story is also done very well. There is never really a time where the film seems to drag except towards the end. This can easily be overlooked though because the dragging of the story near the end is actually for an important reason.

Overall, The Express is a very good film. It doesn't really bring anything innovative to the sports film genre, but almost anyone can get something enjoyable out of this movie; Sports fanatics, mothers, children, and all of the above. This is a sports film definitely worth checking out.

Grade: B+

Ryan Gosling to be Green Lantern?

Latino Review has reported a rumor that Ryan Gosling is currently Warner Bros. #1 choice for the role of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern. Gosling is known by most for being in the uber date movie The Notebook.

If this turns out to be true, I actually think its a great choice. Ryan Gosling is underrated, he got an Oscar nod for Half Nelson and held his own opposite Anthony Hopkins in Fracture. What surprises me the most about this though, is last I heard Common had this role locked down. I would be happy with either, but lets just wait to see how much truth is behind this.

Prince of Persia TGS 2008 Trailer

I know Ubisoft was going for an epic vibe, but the music and gameplay don't sync well. The trailer makes the game look decent instead of making it look like a GOTY contender. Lets hope it ends up the latter and not the former.

Rogue Squadron Trilogy on the Wii?

The latest issue of EGM contains a rumor that Factor 5 licensed out its Rogue Squadron games to an unnamed publisher who is updating the control schemes and visuals as of right now! The games would include the original Rogue Squadron for N64 plus Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike for the Gamecube. All 3 titles are going to be compiled on one Wii disc. With Nintendo making the recent announcement of "Play on Wii" which consisted of GCN remakes infusing Wii controls, I think its safe to say this rumor is true.

Remaking the franchise to suit the Wii is fine, but how about a new Rogue Squadron game? Those were some of the best games on the Cube and I would love to see another one on the little white box. Besides, what the hell else is Factor 5 doing? Making a sequel to the critically acclaimed Lair?


Gaming through Youtube?

The Associated Press has reported that Youtube will be offering its viewers the chance to buy games, movies, TV shows, concert tickets and many other products mentioned in particular video clips. When the viewer clicks on one of the links or "click to buy ads", they are taken to another website such as Amazon or iTunes where they can purchase the desired song or product. Youtube will receive a commission for each completed sale made through these means. Their product management director Shishir Mehrotra said "This is just the first step in this adventure." as they plan to eventually expand this form of advertising to outside the United States. Currently the only game company on board is Electronic Arts but Youtube hopes to convince other gaming companies to join it in the future.

Googles got to recoup their $1.76 Billion dollars somehow right? I don't mind as long as its implemented well and not intrusive to the viewer. The one thing I hate on other media sites is that before your able to even watch a video they force you to go through a 30-45 second advertisement EVERY TIME. Youtube needs to understand that people visit their site to watch videos, not make purchases. As long as they carry that type of mentality I don't think we have anything to worry about. Hell in the long run it could be beneficial to both the consumer and all companies involved.

The Honest Truth on Body Of Lies

Let’s get straight to the point. Quality is expected in a type of film that brings two juggernaut actors together on the silver screen. It is almost impossible to go wrong when you have a great cast, especially consisting of Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. This is why there should not be a surprise when I say that Body of Lies is an undeniably good film. At certain times in its viewing, I can even called it a “great film,” but there are a few issues with its delivery as a whole that keeps it from being considered a classic in its entirety.

Body of Lies is a film whose subject manner can be closely related to the issues America is facing right now with the war on terrorism. Leonardo DiCaprio plays as an American agent ( Roger Ferris) whose job is to track down a Muslim extremist (Al-Saleem) whose current plans are to commit acts of terror in European and American Territories. Russell Crowe (Ed Hoffman) plays as Ferris’ superior and advisor whose in charge of the whole tracking operation. As you have probably been able to tell by the film’s title, the movie deals a lot with trust issues; trust between Roger and Farris in their attempts to track don Al-Saleem, and trust between America and Foreign agencies when working together to complete the mission. This storyline and the issues it entails set the film’s audience up for an exciting and suspenseful ride with just a few speed bumps here and there.

Let’s look at the positives first. The storyline is very interesting and consists of a few twists that will definitely keep viewers on their toes. The acting performances are incredible. The chemistry between DiCaprio and Crowe during their dialogue with each other plays a big part in what makes the film so intriguing. Also, the couple of action sequences that do take place in the story are top notch. Depictions of terrorist attacks, bomb explosions, and utter chaos are very realistic. The cinematography made me feel as though I was actually a witness of what was taken place in the story.

Now although I had so many positive things to say about the movie, there are a few issues that must be addressed. The main issue deals with the pacing of the film. With its 128 min long viewing time, its seems as though a good 20 min could have been left off. For instance, there is a love interest that begins to develop between DiCaprio’s character and a Palestinian woman. The development of this love interest isn’t entirely bad, but there are times where you wish they would cut the flirting between the two characters and get back to the mission at hand on finding the terrorist. Due to scenes such as this, the movie tends to drag a bit at times. Another issue I have with the film is that there just wasn't enough showing of Russell Crowe. When watching a film with great actors together similar to that Oceans 11 (George Clooney and Brad Pitt), one of the main enjoyments of the film is seeing the two actors interact with each other. There just wasn’t enough Russell Crowe in Body of Lies. Most of the scenes with him in it consisted of him stuffing his face with food and talking to DiCaprio on a phone at a his desk. The film would have been even better if there was just more interaction between DiCaprio and Crowe.

Overall, Body of Lies is a very enjoyable film. With the many disappointing films that have come out in the past few weeks, watching Body of Lies was refreshing. You guys should definitely check it out despite its long length and few pacing issues.

The Future of Marvel Films

According to superherohype, the next 4 Marvel films will be filmed at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach, CA. The reason for this specific studio choice can be explained by Marvel's President of Physical Production himself:

"In making this deal with Raleigh to produce our upcoming films at the Manhattan Beach Studios, we are most excited about keeping our film production here in California and taking advantage of the best crews in the Los Angeles area," said Louis D'Esposito. "All of our production partners on these upcoming films have been incredibly accommodating in terms of their creativity and financial structures, allowing us to remain in California. Raleigh Studios has long been known for the superior quality of its film production facilities and we know that Manhattan Beach will be the ideal location to produce our movies to the highest standards that our fans expect."

The 4 films being produced at this location are
Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America, and The Avengers. These films are planned to be released on May 7, 2010; July 16th 2010; May 6, 2011; and July 15, 2011 respectively. Cerebronews will continue to keep you posted on the production of these highly anticipated films.
